12 Month Organizing Challenge: Closets

Are you ready for March’s organizational challenge? Spring is here, which means it’s time to switch your winter clothes for lighter, breezier styles. Plus, as an added bonus, you can clean out your closet while you do this! Spring wardrobe, spring cleaning—it’s a win-win. Here are some tips to get started.

1. Sort clothes into piles

We’re all guilty of hanging on to certain items longer than needed. To declutter and make more room for items you actually wear, place clothes into three piles: Keep, wash, donate. We suggest asking yourself these questions to make the process easier:
How often do I wear this?

-Is this a designer or collectible item of value worth keeping?
-Is this item damaged or unable to be cleaned?
-Does this add value to my life?

Once this is done, sort items into categories such as coats, bags, etc. Store non seasonal ones in vacuum bags and place them in a secure area like your basement or under your bed.

Expert tip: Follow the six month rule. If you haven’t worn something in the last six months, chances are you won’t miss it too much.

2. Be creative with your closet space

Make the most of your space with hooks and racks. For example, placing hooks on the inside of your door allows you to hang scarves, necklaces, or hats without compromising on the inner space reserved for bulkier items. We also suggest tucking certain items, like special occasion shoes, in garment bags or on racks that can be neatly tucked away under clothing.

3. Hang smartly

Hang items that are in frequent use near the front of the closet to save you time looking for them. Reserve hangers for bulkier items like blazers or delicate pieces like fancy dresses. Most sweaters and pants can be neatly folded on shelves, which will increase your hanging space. Organize pieces by use, color, material—whatever works for you!

Expert tip: To avoid mess, place your laundry basket directly in your closet if space allows. This means any dirty clothing will be hidden from view.
